Born in 1953 in the region of the Ural Mountains in Russia, Leonid Tishkov lives and Works in Moscow.
Graduating from the school of medicine, he co-edited a medical encyclopedia before turning towards illustration and working for numerous newspapers. Since the 1980's and his introduction to Moscow's conceptual circles, Tishkov has consecrated himself to artistic practice. He creates a rich universe peoples with characters and surrealistic symbols which form the outline of his poetic stories. These stories are constantly evolving, recounted through objects, drawings, paintings, photographs, videos, the artist's notebooks or plays. For the last ten years Tishkov has mostly created installations, photographic series and videos. His films combine surrealistic and ethnographic dimensions, personal mythology and absurd humor. Tishkov is the author of numerous books, such as Dabloids, Deep-Sea Divers, and How to Become a Genius Artist without a Grain of Talent. He has also written, produced and directed the plays Dabloids, Divers and Living in a Trunk, presented in Russia, the United States and Sweden.
